NHBC through the decades
1930s
NHBRC established to tackle "jerry-building" between the wars. It aimed to increase the care and professionalism shown by house builders, thereby improving the finished product.
1940s
NHBRC leads the way. NHBRC becomes the leading independent standards setting body within the industry, as a voluntary venture into self-regulation and consumer protection by the industry.
1950s
Demand for family housing rockets in the post-war baby boom years. NHBRC became self-supporting using income generated from builder registrations.
1960s
Protection for consumers is strengthened by introducing the ten year warranty. NHBRC creates a new executive committee with a widened membership, and financial control passed away from the builders, on the initiative of the builders themselves.
1970s
The birth of the modern NHBC. It is now completely independent of Government and house builders, and in control of its governance. NHBC was approved as an insurance company by the Department of Trade.
1980s
The Pride in the Job Awards are launched to reward building site managers and the impact they have on home building standards, witha yearlong judging process recognising regional and national success. NHBC becomes an Approved Inspector offering a building control service.
1990s
As the market needs change. NHBC brings out new products and services to meet the changing face of house building, including training and health and safety.
2000s
NHBC continues to drive the industry agenda forward through the funding of research and work with government. The NHBC Foundation is created.
2010s
NHBC celebrates 75 years of raising standards to protect homeowners in 2011. Pride in the Job reaches its 30th year, Building Control marks its 25th anniversary, and the Foundation its fifth.
