Habitat for Humanity

In 2007 NHBC adopted international housing charity 'Habitat for Humanity' (HFH) as our corporate charity and become founding partner of their 'HopeBuilders' campaign.

HopeBuilders enables a family living in poverty to build and own a decent affordable home.  Each home costs £1,235, which buys all the materials and labour to build a typical Habitat dwelling.

As part of our commitment to HFH, NHBC pledged to raise enough money to build 100 Habitat homes in the developing world.

NHBC's fundraising spanned a range of activities, from enabling a team of NHBC volunteers to go to Pondicherry in India to help build homes for families affected by the Asian Tsunami, to organising an industry wide HopeBuilder Charity Challenge event in September 2007, which saw more than 20 teams taking part in a demanding hike and shelter building challenge in the Hope Valley.

Following a year of fundraising, NHBC's Chief Executive, Imtiaz Farookhi, presented a cheque for £200,000 to Habitat for Humanity - far exceeding the original target of £123,500.

Ian Walkden, Habitat's National Director for Great Britain, said: "When NHBC committed to raise funds for 100 homes, it really was a historical moment for Habitat. Thank you to everyone for your help and support in raising vital funds to build more than 160 homes for families in desperate need of a safe, decent home."
