Legislation and research

Approved Document E of the Building Regulations relates to the passage of sound, and provides guidance of the required level of performance as well as practical examples.

Visit NHBC's TechZone for the latest guidance and news on Building regulations, including the full AD E (2004 version).

The Code for Sustainable Homes requirements for sound insulation could provide you with simple Code credits.

  • HEA2 seeks to reduce the chance of noise complaints from neighbours with up to four credits for achieving higher levels of acoustic performance.
  • POL1 offers one credit and requires acoustic (and other) insulants to have a global warming potential of <5 GWP.

For more details on the Code for Sustainable Homes, visit our Sustainability section.

The NHBC Foundation carries out a number of research projects to provide effective guidance on key issues.  The following reports, for example, include information about views on noise control and acoustic insulation.

Modern methods of construction - report NF1

Household's views on modern housing - report NF6

A full list of reports is available on the NHBC Foundation website.
