Park Dale Code 6 photovoltaics

The 'zero carbon' site near Castleford is the UK's largest to have received post construction certification for its Code level 6 performance (as at Dec 2011).

NHBC's Sustainability team worked closely with contractor Bramall Construction from pre-planning stages through to construction of the dwellings to ensure all 91 units achieved code level 6 for client Wakefield and District Housing.

The £12million scheme, part funded by the HCA, provides two, three and four-bedroom family homes.  The traditional brick and block construction belies a combination of different technologies to achieve impressive energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures.

Alongside high levels of insulation and air tightness are a district biomass heating system and photovoltaics.  Each home also uses mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems and grey water recycling.  NHBC worked with the design and construction teams to address the complex challenges of combining the various energy saving measures.

"The NHBC has strength in depth, having expertise in all aspects of sustainability. They didn't just carry out the Code assessment in isolation, but acted as a sounding board through the design stage. Working with a recognised organisation such as the NHBC gave us the confidence that we could deliver this exemplar project. Bramall Construction is a leading contractor in social housing and, together with the NHBC, we have developed our knowledge of the Code from the beginning"
