Summary

This course from NHBC builds on our successful 'Code for Sustainable Homes' introductory course. Energy rating is the largest single part of achieving Code for Sustainable Homes. Whether you want to address specific issues relating to energy and the Code, or simply want to learn the fundamentals of energy rating, this course is for you! You will also gain an insight in to the next major step change to Part L in 2010, and the preparation needed to achieve it.

  • Build on this to improve SAP energy ratings.

Understanding SAP
What it is and how it works.
Accredited assessors and software for carrying out energy ratings for new build dwellings.

Building Regulations Approved Document Part L1A requirements

Influences on SAP
Fabric insulation - 'U-values'.
Space and water heating - fuel factors, controls and systems.
Air leakage - PassivHaus, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (appendix Q).
Renewable energy - feasibility studies, practicalities, warranty and maintenance.

SAP Assumptions
Light and appliances energy demand.
Orientation of building and solar gain.
Building Research Establishment Domestic Energy Model (BREDEM 9).

SAP and the Code for sustainable homes
Overview of Code - sections and mandatory requirements.
