Redrow Homes - automated external defibrillators project

More about the winners

The first Commended Initiative went to Barratt Homes. Like many, Barratt already has a well-established Health and Safety management system but felt they needed to introduce another step to drive their performance up a notch. The result is the implementation of a '5 Steps to Safety' programme. '5 Steps to Safety' engages the entire site workforce, challenging them to think about the work they do and to assess if the controls are sufficient to keep both themselves and others safe.

An additional and equally important component of this programme is encouraging everyone on site to report near misses, those incidents that could so easily have resulted in an accident. In this regard the judges felt that this builder was among the leaders in the home building sector.

The second Commended Initiative went to Redrow Homes. The judges were impressed when they heard that this company had introduced AED's, also known as automated external defibrillators onto almost all of their sites following the death of a site manager from a sudden cardiac arrest. The judges felt that this provision was a valuable and worthwhile enhancement to the on-site first aid facility and that it deserved to be commended.
