What are NHBC Standards and who sets them?

NHBC Standards are the definitive standards for new home construction and conversion in the UK, and have been developed over many years.

The Standards are set by a Board committee representing all relevant organisations interested in improving the quality of new and converted homes. Builders, consumer organisations and professional institutions are represented on the committee.

NHBC Standards take into account the Building Regulations, British Standards and NHBC's own claims record of defects. We believe that prevention is better than cure, so the Standards are continually improved to minimise defects.

How does NHBC check that your builder complies with NHBC Standards?

20.Builder working at top of building NHBC carry out inspections at key stages of a home's construction, which is an important tool in helping to reduce the number of problems in new homes.

These stages have been carefully selected to provide NHBC with the maximum effectiveness in reducing the number of significant defects. Our Inspectors are trained to identify potential defects on site prior to completion to minimise issues for the future homeowner.

The key stages are:

  • Drainage
  • Superstructure
  • Pre-plaster
  • Pre-handover

NHBC inspectors do not check every detail of construction on each property, however these inspections will satisfy themselves, as far as is reasonably practicable, that homes conform to the Building Regulations and NHBC Technical Standards. If you have any concerns about the quality of your home during or after construction you should consult the builder. If you do not get a satisfactory answer, please contact Customer Services.
