What does 'NHBC registered builder' mean?

20. On site discussionOnly builders and developers who can demonstrate financial security and technical competence are registered with NHBC.

NHBC carries out commercial and technical assessments of all applicant builders and developers before offering 'registered' status.

All registered builders agree to comply with NHBC Rules and build homes to NHBC Standards of construction.

Approximately 20,000 builders and developers are on the Register, and around 80% of new homes in the UK are registered with NHBC each year. Around 1.7 million homeowners are currently benefiting from Buildmark, our 10-year warranty and insurance.

What are NHBC Standards and who sets them?

NHBC Standards are the definitive standards for new home construction and conversion in the UK, and have been developed over many years.

The Standards are set by a Board committee representing all relevant organisations interested in improving the quality of new and converted homes. Builders, consumer organisations and professional institutions are represented on the committee.

NHBC Standards take into account the Building Regulations, British Standards and NHBC's own claims record of defects. We believe that prevention is better than cure, so the Standards are continually improved to minimise defects.

How does NHBC check that your builder complies with NHBC Standards?

20.Builder working at top of buildingDuring the construction of every home, NHBC inspectors carry out inspections to satisfy themselves, as far as is practicable, that each home conforms to NHBC Standards and is an acceptable risk for Buildmark warranty and insurance.

Inspectors will visit each property to check the elements that you would not normally see, for example the foundations, the damp proof course and the cavity wall insulation. However, NHBC inspectors do not check every detail of construction on each property.

If you have any concerns about the quality of your home during or after construction you should consult the builder. If you do not get a satisfactory answer, please contact Customer Services.
