The Solo inspection process
NHBC's inspection regime is based around a series of inspections which take place at key times during the construction of your Home (Stage Completion Inspections). We expect to visit your development around 9 times during construction. One of the advantages of using NHBC is that we provide you with a Site Record book which will be used to record each visit, our findings, a diary of progress on site, each approved stage, and all the contact information you need for NHBC.
Stage Completion Inspections
The first Stage Completion inspection takes place after the foundations have been excavated but before concreting, the remaining inspections are arranged directly between you and our inspector according to your programme and the type of home you are building.
Your insurance cover begins when we issue the Stage Completion Certificate (SCC) in respect of the construction of foundations and substructure. SCCs are issued for 7 of the 9 inspections that take place during construction of your home, these may help facilitate the release of funds if you have a mortgage or loan to finance the building work.
You have the responsibility to notify our inspector at least 24 hours before each stage is ready for inspection. You, or your agreed agent, must be present when the inspections take place. This is a vital part of our inspection regime and enables us to identify problems or approve sections of work. If you do not notify us of a stage, you will be required to open up that work for inspection and reinstate it at your own expense.
When the final SCC has been issued, we will send you the insurance certificate.

Building Control
All new homes must comply with the Government's Building Regulations through building control. With NHBC you can combine building control inspections with our Stage Completion Inspections so that you receive consistent advice and only need to deal with one inspector. To apply for NHBC building control, all you need to do is tick the box on the application form and include the appropriate fee, the inspections can then be discussed at your initial site assessment.
