Dame Helena Shovelton takes post as Chairman of NHBC Consumer Committee

Former Chair of the Audit Commission, Dame Helena Shovelton, today takes up her post as Chairman of NHBC's Consumer Committee, taking over from Sir Graham Hart who retires from the role after nine years.

Dame Helena brings extensive experience in consumer affairs and related issues and has held a number of senior positions across consumer and government bodies.

Notably she was Vice-Chair, and then Chair, of the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux between 1990 and 1999, Chair of the Audit Commission (1998-2001) and has been a member of the Competition Commission, Better Regulation Task Force and the Banking Code Standards Board. Most recently Dame Helena was Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation, retiring at the end of June 2012, and is currently non-executive Chair of 2020 Health. Throughout her career Dame Helena has been a consumer advocate and has been instrumental in ensuring that the consumer voice is heard.

"We are delighted to that Dame Helena will chair NHBC's Consumer Committee and know that her wide-ranging experience of consumer issues, corporate governance and service delivery will be invaluable in ensuring that consumer interests remain at the heart of NHBC's work.

"NHBC plays a central role in the UK housing industry and its core remit is to raise standards of new homes and protect homeowners. As such, the Consumer Committee is vital in monitoring NHBC's performance, particularly in relation to Treating Customers Fairly and in providing advice and recommendations to NHBC's main Board on consumer issues.

"We welcome the introduction of the Financial Conduct Authority and will both embrace and support its role in improving protection for consumers in the UK. Under Dame Helena's chairmanship the Consumer Committee will remain at the forefront of NHBC's consumer-facing activities."

On taking up the role, Dame Helena Shovelton said;

"With over 75 years of experience of the new homes industry, NHBC has clear aims and objectives and central to these is the consumer and new homeowner. I have been impressed with the work of the Consumer Committee and the importance NHBC places on the independent advice and direction it provides. I look forward to working with the Committee members to ensure that consumer interests remain central to NHBC's work."

Dame Helena Shovelton has been a member of the NHBC Council since 2009 and was appointed as a non-executive Director of the Board in September 2012.

NHBC's Consumer Committee meets quarterly with the brief of representing the interests of homeowners and advising on all NHBC initiatives that impact on homeowners.
