House-builders commended in national awards for outstanding health and safety

Fifty four outstanding house-building site managers from across the UK have been commended in the first round of judging for the NHBC Health and Safety Awards 2013.

Recognising on-site health and safety best practice by house-builders across the nation, the Awards help highlight the need for builders to be especially vigilant of the safety of their workers and the public as the industry emerges from recession.

Tom Kitchen, NHBC Health and Safety Operations Manager, said:

"There are signs that the house-building industry is starting to pick up, and there is a real danger that site managers could find themselves short of experienced workers and tradesmen. The recession saw many skilled practitioners leave the industry, taking with them knowledge of safe working practices.

"The NHBC Health and Safety Awards reward site managers for their continued dedication to health and safety, with better run sites usually being sites of better quality as well. Earning a Commendation is a significant achievement, and I wish everyone the best of luck for the grand final in July."

The Commended winners underwent a rigorous judging process involving comprehensive site assessments by NHBC's health and safety professionals. Entrants were scored against a wide variety of criteria, including planning and site management. They will now contest the national title in their category at the Awards' grand final at the ICC in Birmingham on 12 July 2013.

All commended entries will now undergo a further round of judging carried out by independent health and safety experts. The panel includes new judge Neil Stephens, Head of Planning and Communications in the Construction Division of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), alongside Kevin Fear, Head of Health, Safety and Environment at Construction Skills, and Michelle Aldous, Chief Executive of Constructing Better Health.

The trio will select the regional and national winners. Visit for more information, including a full list of all the Commended house-builders.
