Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls announces Labour plans to prioritise housebuilding

Speaking at flagship industry event, the NHBC Annual Lunch, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Ed Balls, announced Labour's plans to make housebuilding a priority and oversee the building of 200,000 new homes a year by 2020.

Mr Balls also said that a Labour government would work to support the building of new towns using infrastructure guarantees, stating that Coalition plans to create new garden cities have stalled.

Mr Balls additionally said that Labour does support Help to Buy, the Coalition's mortgage scheme which allows people with small deposits to buy homes, but repeated his criticism that the policy is available for buyers of homes of up to £600,000 and those seeking to remortgage their home.
