Parliamentary candidate highlights housing boost for the local economy

Conservative candidate, Alberto Costa, today visited a new housing development in South Leicestershire that is protected by NHBC's 10 year Buildmark warranty. Over 300 jobs are expected to be created for the local area, including Apprentice bricklayers.

Mr Costa, who is contesting the seat of South Leicestershire in the upcoming General Election, met with representatives from NHBC and the developers, David Wilson Homes, at their Whetstone Park development in Leicester. As well as providing a boost to the local economy, the construction of 150 family homes will help supply the growing demand for new, high-quality housing within the community.

The event was organised by NHBC, the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, to highlight its risk management processes and to show the Parliamentary candidate a prime example of energy efficient homes that meet current building regulations. Last year, NHBC registered 11,830 new homes in the East Midlands, the highest level since 2007. Of those homes, 8,454 were detached or semi-detached homes, the highest level seen since 2002.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Costa said: "I am very grateful to the representatives of the NHBC for helping to organise this useful site visit. If elected, I am keen to ensure that there is appropriate development of new and affordable housing in and around South Leicestershire. The views of residents who live near to proposed developments must be taken into account to ensure that the whole local community benefit from quality housing developments."

John Reddington, Managing Director of David Wilson Homes East Midlands said: "We were pleased to welcome Mr Costa to Whetstone Park, to view both homes under construction and our recently completed show homes, demonstrating the build process from beginning to end. This is a fantastic opportunity for him to understand the hard work and technical skill that goes into every one of our new homes."

Ólöf Jónsdóttir, NHBC's Public Affairs Manager said: "NHBC registered 145,174 new homes for development in 2014 across the UK, up 9% on 2013, with research showing that 245,000 homes are needed every year to meet demand. As supply grows to meet this need, it is vital that we continue to deliver on standards, and NHBC will work with the industry and Parliamentarians to ensure that the build quality of new homes in the UK remains high."

Richard Hartshorn, NHBC's Regional Director for the East of England, said: "NHBC figures show that there were 552 new homes being built last year in the South Leicestershire constituency, more than doubling the 242 homes built in 2013. We are delighted to see this community grow with this huge boost in new homes over the last two years. NHBC has worked for 80 years to raise standards in house-building, and we are delighted to be able to show Alberto Costa first-hand how we are helping builders to construct high quality new homes in South Leicestershire."
