Parliamentary candidate visits much needed new homes for Sheffield

Labour Parliamentary candidate, Louise Haigh, today visited a new housing development in Sheffield that is protected by NHBC's 10 year Buildmark warranty. The development, sitting on a former school site home, will provide 52 energy-efficient new homes when complete.

Ms Haigh, who is contesting the seat of Sheffield Heeley in the upcoming General Election, met with representatives from NHBC and the developers, Miller Homes, at their Norton Green site. The new homes will be built to Code Level 3, with energy saving measures being used for each home, such as waste water heat recovery systems, rotary driers, composters, and water butts.

The event was organised by NHBC, the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, to highlight its risk management processes and to show the Parliamentary candidate a prime example of energy-efficient homes that meet current building regulations.

Within the constituency of Sheffield Heeley, housing starts have been relatively low when compared with the rest of the UK. NHBC figures show that development on 89 homes started in 2013, with 70 homes being started in 2014 (subject to adjustments). However, the wider region of Yorkshire and the Humber has seen the number of new homes rise, with 8,795 new homes registered with NHBC in 2014, compared to 7,064 in 2013.

Commenting on the visit, Ms Haigh said: "One of the major issues in this election is housing so it's great to see, not only new homes being built, but to see the energy and safety standards that the NHBC are upholding. Not only has this site been used for additional housing but the profits of the sale have been reinvested into Graves Leisure Centre, which is a fantastic investment for the area and will provide a great new facility for local residents."

Andy Davies, Miller Homes Operations Director, commented: "It was a pleasure to welcome Louise and representatives from NHBC to our newest Yorkshire development, Norton Green, and showcase the homes on offer, our build schedule, sales process and commitment to quality and sustainability."

He added: "We are not only proud to be delivering much needed family homes to this area of the city, where there had been a distinct shortage in comparison with other areas of the region, but also delighted to be able to contribute to other hugely important local projects such as additional educational facilities and transport infrastructure that will support the local community now and in years to come."

Ólöf Jónsdóttir, NHBC's Public Affairs Manager said: "NHBC registered 145,174 new homes for development in 2014 across the UK, up 9% on 2013, with research showing that 245,000 homes are needed every year to meet demand. As supply grows to meet this need, it is vital that we continue to deliver on standards, and NHBC will work with the industry and Parliamentarians to ensure that the build quality of new homes in the UK remains high."
