Alex Salmond meets Apprentices at local housing development in Gordon

The Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate, Alex Salmond, today visited a new housing development in Aberdeen that is protected by NHBC's 10 year Buildmark warranty. The housing development will provide 191 high-quality new homes, including 46 low-cost homes, when complete.

Mr Salmond, who is contesting the Westminster seat of Gordon in the upcoming General Election, met with representatives from NHBC and the developers, Barratt Homes, at their Mill Brae site in Bridge of Don. The developer highlighted the skills shortages that are adversely affecting the industry, whilst demonstrating how they are supporting the training of Apprentices to address this.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Salmond said: "Mill Brae is a first class development and I am delighted to have been invited to see the progress at the site. Nothing could be more important than capturing the energy and enthusiasm of our young people - the future of this area - and the young apprentices engaged in work at Mill Brae are gaining skills and experience that are second to none".

Doug McLeod, Regional Director at Barratt Scotland, commented: "We were very pleased to meet Mr Salmond today to demonstrate our investment in people through the provision of much needed new homes at our Mill Brae development in Aberdeen. Mill Brae is just one of our new developments providing employment in the area, particularly for Apprentices and young people keen to secure opportunities in the house-building industry".

"It also showcases the modern methods of construction employed by Barratt Homes today. By using new technologies, for example thermo-imaging to identify insulation requirements, we can constantly develop our designs to provide the highest quality and most energy efficient new homes on the market".

Malcolm MacLeod, NHBC Director Scotland, said: "Along with our local inspection team, I was pleased to demonstrate NHBC's inspection processes to Alex Salmond, explaining how these and our 10 year Buildmark Insurance cover provide consumer protection for home-owners".

Construction at Mill Brae is well under way and the new homes are being built by Barratt Homes to high levels of current timber frame construction techniques. New home starts in Gordon have outperformed the UK constituency average in the last couple of years. The latest NHBC figures show that housing starts have been increasing in Gordon from 376 in 2012 to 401 in 2013, further rising to 502 new home starts in 2014 (subject to adjustments). The event was organised by NHBC, the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, to highlight its risk management processes and to show the Parliamentary candidate a prime example of new homes that meet current building regulations.
