Parliamentary candidate for Aberavon visits new homes at forefront of economic recovery

Labour candidate, Stephen Kinnock, today visited a new housing development in Aberavon that is protected by NHBC's 10 year Buildmark warranty. The development, which has created about 350 jobs for the local area, is expected to deliver 175 much needed new homes when fully completed.

Mr Kinnock, who is contesting the seat of Aberavon in the upcoming General Election, met with representatives from NHBC and the developers, Barratt Homes, at their Crymlyn Grove development in Skewen. The development offers a variety of modern, sustainable family homes, 20% of which will be affordable.

The event was organised by NHBC, the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, to highlight its risk management processes and to show the parliamentary candidate a prime example of modern, energy efficient homes that meet current building regulations.

Building on the local community, the developers will be providing twenty allotments on completion to be run by the local authority. Barratt Homes have also ensured that highways and private soakways are upgraded and designed around sustainable drainage systems.

Mr Kinnock commented: "The Crymlyn Grove development is an excellent example of what needs to be done to help us tackle the housing and jobs crises that we currently face. I was really impressed by the quality of the work that's being done here, and by the very positive way in which NHBC and Barratt Homes are contributing to the local economy through jobs, apprenticeships and investment."

We are building 175 new homes for the area and this supports more than 350 jobs."

Ólöf Jónsdóttir, NHBC's Public Affairs Manager said: "NHBC registered 145,174 new homes for development in 2014 across the UK, up 9% on 2013, with research showing that 245,000 homes are needed every year to meet demand. As supply grows to meet this need, it is vital that we continue to deliver on standards, and NHBC will work with the industry and Parliamentarians to ensure that the build quality of new homes in the UK remains high."

NHBC Inspection Manager for the South West and Wales, Steve Owen, added: "The number of homes registered with NHBC in the constituency has risen over the last few years and we are delighted to see this community grow. NHBC has worked for over 75 years to raise standards in house-building, and we are delighted to be able to show Stephen Kinnock first-hand how we are helping builders to construct high quality new homes in Aberavon."
