The Big Site Manager Kick Off! 30/05/06

As football fever sweeps the nation, the country's building site managers are gearing up to tackle each other for the UK's most coveted house-building trophy - an NHBC Pride in the Job Award.

Pride in the Job (PIJ) is the most formidable competition in the house-building industry and over the past year 18,000 site managers have been demonstrating their site control skills to impress NHBC judges.

To score a PIJ home goal, site managers must demonstrate exceptional standards in all aspects of their work, from their management skills, to the quality and finish of the homes they build.

With the first round of Pride in the Job winners imminent, keep an eye out for PIJ flags and site boards, this means the new homes have been built by a `Pride in the Job' award-winning site manager:

If you're house hunting, here are a few other top tips on what to look for when buying a new home:

  • When house hunting, a good starting point is the internet. Use the search facility to find new developments in your area or visit house builder web sites direct. Have an idea of how many bedrooms you want and how much you want to spend.  You can also register with estate agents online who will e-mail or send you details of new homes in your chosen area.
  • Check whether the homes are being built by an NHBC-registered builder by going on line at www.nhbc.co.uk or contact NHBC customer services on 01494 735363.   If they are registered with NHBC, it means the home will have the benefit of NHBC's 10-year Buildmark warranty and insurance cover.
  • If you have see a new development being built in your area, contact the builder or developer and make an appointment to view the show home.  This will give you a good idea of the design and dimensions of the other homes. Also ask about any additional extras, such as fitted carpets and extra power points which they may offer.
  • Get the site manager's permission, (you need that for health and safety reasons) to look around the site. Check if it is tidy and looks well managed.  This will give another clue about the builder's commitment to quality. Also if you are viewing more than one home in day, it's a good idea to jot down the things about a home that make it memorable.  This will help you review the homes you have seen later on.
  • Once you have found a property you like, it is a good idea to check out the surrounding area, particularly if you are relocating. Consider transport links and locate the nearest schools, shops, petrol station etc. Find out how much Council Tax, electricity and water cost on average and whether there are any maintenance fees to pay.
  • Remember, first impressions count.  Stand back from the house to view it fully, taking note of the use of stone or brick, the placement of windows, the front door and any architectural detail.
  • Make at least two visits - view the house in the morning and evening so you can see the traffic flow around the home for yourself.

Finally, happy house hunting!

Ends
