January 2000 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JANUARY 2000

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show a rise of 5 per cent in January applications to build new homes as compared with the same month last year.

A total of 13,045 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK. Private sector starts for the month rose to 12,115, up nine per cent on January 1999 (11,110). UK housing association applications decreased to 930, down 30 per cent on the previous year (1,320). This fall differs from the overall trend in social housing which saw starts in 1999 increase by four per cent over the previous twelve months.

Rod MacEachrane, NHBC's group director of operations, says: "A nine per cent increase in private sector registrations in January is most encouraging, especially as it follows a five per cent increase in the final quarter of last year. These figures provide firm evidence that last year's recovery in demand for new homes is feeding through into increased house building activity."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 11,900 in January showing a rise of three per cent on last year's figure of 11,585.

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 519 new homes were sold each day during January 1999, showing little change on the same month last year (520).
