February 2000 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: FEBRUARY 2000

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show a rise of one per cent in February applications to build new homes as compared with the same month last year.

A total of 14,025 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK. Private sector starts for the month rose to 12,490, up one per cent on February 1999 (12,390). UK housing association applications increased to 1,535, up five per cent on the previous year (1,465).

Rod MacEachrane, NHBC's group director of operations, says: "House building activity has got off to a good start this year. Private sector new home registrations were up five per cent during January and February as compared with a year ago, and total housing completions were up eight per cent. We hope the Budget will not contain any measures which might damage this recovery."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 11,490 in February showing a rise of 14 per cent on the figure for the same period in 1999 (10,070).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 497 new homes were sold each day during February 2000, showing a five per cent increase on the same month last year (472).
