UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: MAY 2000
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show an increase of six per cent in May applications to build new homes as compared with the same month last year.
A total of 12,675 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, a six per cent increase on the same period in 1999 (11,910). Private sector starts for the month rose to 11,850, a ten per cent increase on May 1999 (10,810). There were 825 UK housing association applications, a decrease of 25 per cent on the previous year (1,100)
Rod MacEachrane, NHBC's group director of operations, says: "Private new home registrations in the first five months of this year were two per cent down on a year ago. However, a welcome increase in May registrations has helped to boost activity levels. Total housing completions also rose sharply in May. Completions for the first five months were up four per cent overall on the same period last year."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,540 in May showing an increase of nine per cent on the figure for the same period in 1999 (12,400).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 571 new homes were sold each day during May 2000, showing an eight per cent decrease on the same month last year (618).
