UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JULY 2000

New statistics from NHBC (National House-Building Council) show July applications to build new homes decreased by one per cent as compared with the same month last year.

A total of 13,600 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, a one per cent decrease on the same month in 1999 (13,735). Private sector starts for the month rose to 12,340, a two per cent increase on July 1999 (12,110). There were 1,260 UK housing association applications, a decrease of 23 per cent on the previous year (1,630).

Rod MacEachrane, NHBC's group director of operations, says: "House building activity is steadily improving, private housing registrations in the last three months were up eight per cent on a year ago and average daily sales of new homes have risen four per cent so far this year."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 12,055 in July showing a decrease of 18 per cent on the figure for the same month in 1999 (14,720).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 555 new homes were sold each day during July 2000, showing a four per cent increase on the same month last year (535).
