August 2000 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: AUGUST 2000

New statistics from NHBC (National House-Building Council) show August applications to build new homes increased by ten per cent as compared with the same month last year.

A total of 14,270 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, up ten per cent on the same month in 1999 (12,980). Private sector starts for the month rose to 12,870, an 11 per cent increase on August 1999 (11,565). There were 1,405 UK housing association applications, a decrease of just one per cent on the previous year (1,420).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "Private house building activity has been strong over the last few months, despite some signs of a slowdown in the wider housing market. In the four months May to August, private housing starts were up nearly 9% on the same period last year. However the year-to-date increase is only 2% reflecting the weakness of starts earlier in the year."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 12,095 in August showing an increase of one per cent on the figure for the same month in 1999 (11,990).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 479 new homes were sold each day during August 2000, showing a 15 per cent decrease on the same month last year (563).
