UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: OCTOBER 2000
New statistics from NHBC (National House-Building Council) show October applications to build new homes decreased by one per cent as compared with the same month last year.
A total of 13,335 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, down one per cent on the same month in 1999 (13,450). Private sector starts for the month dipped to 11,965, a five per cent decrease on October 1999 (12,540). There were 1,370 UK housing association applications, a rise of 51 per cent on the previous year (905).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The drop in NHBC private housing registrations in September and October, after four months of growth, may partly reflect bad weather conditions. The total number of private registrations in the first ten months of 2000 was virtually unchanged on the same period last year."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,250 in October showing a decrease of three per cent on the figure for the same month in 1999 (13,715).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 506 new homes were sold each day during October 2000, showing a five per cent increase on the same month last year (482).
