November 2000 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: NOVEMBER 2000

NHBC (National House-Building Council) statistics released today show November applications to build new homes decreased by 14 per cent as compared with the same month last year.

A total of 11,755 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, down 14 per cent on the same month in 1999 (13,675). Private sector starts dropped to 10,730, a 14 per cent decrease on November 1999 (12,435). There were 1,020 UK housing association applications, a decrease of 18 per cent on the previous year (1,240).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "This month's figures for housing starts reflect weaker demand, planning delays and labour shortages. Bad weather has also affected applications and completions."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,035 in November showing a decrease of 17 per cent on the figure for the same month in 1999 (15,705).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 531 new homes were sold each day during November 2000, showing a 12 per cent decrease on the same month last year (601).
