January 2001 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JANUARY 2001

NHBC (National House-Building Council) figures issued today show a rise of 11 per cent in January applications to build new homes as compared with the same month last year.

A total of 14,525 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, up 11 per cent on the same month in 2000 (13,045). Private sector starts for the month rose to 13,220, an increase of nine per cent on January 2000 (12,115). UK housing association applications increased to 1,305, a rise of 40 per cent on the previous year (930).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The new year has got off to a good start. The January rise in housing starts follows a strong December, which saw registrations increase by 12 per cent against those in December 1999. It is also encouraging to note that an average of 517 new homes were sold per day in January, which is an improvement on last quarter's average of 507".

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 11,450 in January showing a drop of four per cent on last year's figure of 11,885.

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 517 new homes were sold each day during January 2001, showing little change on the same month last year (519).
