UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: FEBRUARY 2001
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by 16 per cent in February 2001 when compared against figures for February last year.
A total of 11,845 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, down 16 per cent on the same month in 2000 (14,020). Private sector starts for the month fell to 10,550, a decrease of 15 per cent on February 2000 (12,485). There were 1,295 UK housing association applications, down 16 per cent on the previous year (1,535).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "January registrations signalled a strong start to the year, so it is disappointing to see such a sharp drop in February. Taking the first two months together, NHBC registrations were down three per cent on a year ago."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 9,805 in February, a fall of 15 per cent on last years figure of 11,485.
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 497 new homes were sold each day during February 2001, showing no change on the same month last year (497).
