UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: APRIL 2001
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by one per cent in April 2001 when compared against figures for April last year.
A total of 11,511 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, down one per cent on the same month in 2000 (11,670). Private sector starts for the month fell to 9,933, a decrease of three per cent on April 2000 (10,229). There were 1,578 UK housing association applications, up ten per cent on the previous year (1,441).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "By contrast to February and March, when registrations fell sharply, the April figures dipped by just one per cent. It looks as if the improved weather has allowed home registrations to get back on track. Over the summer builders will probably increase their activities to compensate for the initial slow start."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 11,792 in April, a fall of one per cent on last year's figure of 11,909.
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 527 new homes were sold each day during April 2001, a reduction of seven per cent on the same month last year (567).
