UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: MAY 2001
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased by six per cent in May 2001 when compared with figures for May last year.
A total of 13,398 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, up six per cent on the same month in 2000 (12,673). Private sector starts for the month rose to 12,017, an increase of one per cent on May 2000 (11,849). There were 1,381 UK housing association applications, up 68 per cent on the previous year (824).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The recovery in May registrations seems to confirm that bad weather conditions were largely responsible for the drop in house building activity earlier this year. However, cumulative registrations in the first five months of the year were well down on the same period last year."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 12,887 in May 2001, a fall of five per cent on last year's figure of 13,541.
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 535 new homes were sold each day during May 2001, a reduction of six per cent on the same month last year (571).
