UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JULY 2001
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased by 15 per cent in July 2001 when compared with figures for July last year.
A total of 15,683 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, up 15 per cent on the same month in 2000 (13,602). Private sector starts for the month rose to 14,124, an increase of 14 per cent on July 2000 (12,340). There were 1,559 UK housing association applications, up 24 per cent on the previous year (1,262).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "This year's buoyant housing demand conditions do not appear to have had any impact on house building activity. Despite a welcome rebound in July, NHBC private registrations in the first seven months of the year were 5% lower than in the same period last year, a major factor being planning delays."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,759 in July 2001, an increase of 14 per cent on last year's figure of 12,040.
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 572 new homes were sold each day during July 2001, an increase of three per cent on the same month last year (555).
