UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: AUGUST 2001
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by four per cent in August 2001 when compared with figures for August last year.
A total of 13,654 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, down four per cent on the same month in 2000 (14,270). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,724, showing a small decrease of one per cent on August 2000 (12,867). There were 930 UK housing association applications, down 34 per cent on the previous year (1,403).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "After a strong rebound in NHBC private registrations in July, August saw a one per cent decline, leaving registrations in the eight months to August down four per cent on a year ago. This is disappointing in view of the strength of housing demand so far this year."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,120 in August 2001, an increase of eight per cent on last year's figure of 12,095.
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 507 new homes were sold each day during August 2001, an increase of six per cent on the same month last year (479).
