October 2001 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: OCTOBER 2001

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased in October 2001 when compared with figures for October last year.

A total of 16,090 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, up 21 per cent on the same month in 2000 (13,333). Private sector starts for the month rose to 14,715, an increase of 23 per cent on October 2000 (11,963). There were 1,375 UK housing association applications, showing less than half of a per cent change on the previous year (1,370).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "House builders seem undeterred by recent worries about the outlook for the housing market. NHBC new home registrations have been higher than a year ago in three out of the last four months. However, cumulative registrations up to October 2001 were down one per cent on the same period last year."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,786 in October 2001, an increase of four per cent on the same month last year's figure of 13,261.

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 539 new homes were sold each day during October 2001, an increase of seven per cent on the same month last year (506).
