November 2001 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: NOVEMBER 2001

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by two per cent in November 2001 when compared with figures for November last year.

A total of 11,567 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, down two per cent on the same month in 2000 (11,753). Private sector starts for the month fell slightly to 10,725, showing a marginal decrease on November 2000 (10,732). There were 842 UK housing association applications, down 18 per cent on the previous year (1,021).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "In the early months of 2001, NHBC registrations were sharply down on last years levels. However, a more positive trend since July has meant cumulative registrations in the first 11 months were down only one percent on the same period last year."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,141 in November 2001, a one per cent increase on the same month last year's figure of 13,035.

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 519 new homes were sold each day during November 2001, a decrease of two per cent on the same month last year (531).
