January 2002 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JANUARY 2002

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes hardly changed in January 2002 when compared with figures for January last year.

A total of 14,461 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, showing a minor decrease on the same month in 2001 (14,522). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,966 showing a two percent decrease on January 2001 (13,219). There were 1,495 UK housing association applications, a 15 per cent increase on the previous year (1,303).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of chief executive of NHBC, says " House building has got off to a slow start this year with a total of NHBC registations in January unchanges on a year ago and private registrations down two per cent. We expect to see quite strong growth over the next two months because house building in February and March last year was severely affected by poor weather and flooding."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 12,013 in January 2002, a five per cent increase on the same month last year. (11,447)

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 562 new homes were sold each day during January 2002, an increase of nine per cent on the same month last year (517).
