UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: FEBRUARY 2002
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased by 29 per cent in February 2002 when compared with figures for February last year.
A total of 15,231 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, up 29 per cent on the same month in 2001 (11,846). Private sector starts for the month rose to 13,722, showing a 30 percent increase on February 2001 (10,551). There were 1,509 UK housing association applications, a 17 per cent increase on the previous year (1,295).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "As expected we saw a rise in NHBC registrations in February compared with a year ago. There may be underlying reasons for the improvement in these figures, but the main increase reflects the low level of registrations in February 2001 when poor weather had a big impact on housing site conditions."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 10,778 in February 2002, a ten per cent increase on the same month last year (9,806).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 471 new homes were sold each day during February 2002, a five per cent decrease on the same month last year (497).
