UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: APRIL 2002
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased by 46 per cent in April 2002 when compared with figures for April last year.
A total of 16,826 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, up 46 per cent on the same month in 2001 (11,511). Private sector starts for the month rose to 14,795, showing a 49 percent increase on April 2001 (9,933). There were 2,031 UK housing association applications, a 29 per cent increase on April of the previous year (1,578).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "April statistics show a significant rise in NHBC registrations. Although the increase mainly reflects the low level of registrations in April 2001, cumulative registrations in the first four months of 2002 are showing a 16 per cent improvement on the same period in 2001 and the market seems to be exceptionally buoyant."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 13,081 in April 2002, an 11 per cent increase on the same month last year (11,792).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 574 new homes were sold each day during April 2002, a nine per cent increase on the same month last year (527).
