July 2002 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JULY 2002

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by ten per cent in July 2002 when compared with figures for July last year.

A total of 14,165 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, down ten per cent on the same month in 2001 (15,690). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,708, showing a ten percent decrease on July 2001 (14,131). There were 1,457 UK housing association applications, a seven per cent decrease on July of the previous year (1,559).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "As in June, when registrations decreased by four per cent on the same month in 2001, July also saw a decline in the number of NHBC registrations. Although 2002 to date is showing a ten per cent increase in registrations overall, the rate of new registrations appears to have slowed down. This could be attributed in part to events such as the World Cup and The Queens Jubilee celebrations which resulted in fewer working days over the past two months."

New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 14,052 in July 2002, a two per cent increase on the same month last year (13,802).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 611 new homes were sold each day during July 2002, a seven per cent increase on the same month last year (572).
