UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: AUGUST 2002
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased by one per cent in August 2002 when compared with figures for August last year.
A total of 13,737 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, up one per cent on the same month in 2001 (13,650). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,440, showing a two percent decrease on August 2001 (12,720). There were 1,297 UK housing association applications, a 39 per cent increase on August of the previous year (930).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The decline in July of the number of NHBC registrations has now been reversed to show a one per cent increase in August. This would indicate that overall the demand for new houses has not weakened."
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 12,560 in August 2002, a four per cent decrease on the same month last year (13,120).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 520 new homes were sold each day during August 2002, a three per cent increase on the same month last year (507).
