November 2002 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: NOVEMEBER 2002

Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes increased by 24 per cent in November 2002 when compared with figures for November last year.

In November 2002 14,349 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, up 24 per cent on the same month in 2001 (11,567). Private sector starts for the month rose to 13,053, showing a 22 per cent increase on November 2001 (10,725). There were 1,296 UK housing association applications, a 54 per cent increase on November of the previous year (842).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "November saw a healthy increase in the number of new build registrations. The most activity took place in Yorkshire, the South East and the greatest increase of registrations in the UK was in Greater London, where registrations for the month were almost two and a half times the figure for November 2001."

New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 16,110 in November 2002, a 23 per cent increase on the same month last year (13,132).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 535 new homes were sold each day during November 2002, a three per cent increase on the same month last year (519).
