UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: FEBRUARY 2003
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by one per cent in February 2003 when compared with figures for February last year.
In February 2003 15,109 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, down one per cent on the same month in 2002 (15,232). Private sector starts for the month fell to 13,404 showing a two per cent decrease on February 2002 (13,723). There were 1,705 UK housing association applications, a 13 per cent increase on February of the previous year (1,509).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The number of applications to start new homes and the average number of homes sold each day in February show little change on February last year. New house building appears stable in early 2003 and so far unaffected by reports of a drop in consumer confidence and housing demand."
New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 14,037 in February 2003, a 30 per cent increase on the same month last year (10,797).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 481 new homes were sold each day during February 2003, a two per cent increase on the same month last year (471).
