UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: APRIL 2003
Statistics released today by NHBC (National House-Building Council) show UK applications to build new homes decreased by 13 per cent in April 2003 when compared with figures for April last year.
In April 2003 14,752 applications to start new homes in the UK were made for the combined public and private sectors, down 13 per cent on the same month in 2002 (16,989). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,610 showing a 16 per cent decrease on April 2002 (14,938). There were 2,142 UK housing association applications, a four per cent increase on April of the previous year (2,051).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "April showed a thirteen per cent drop in number of applications to start new homes and a twelve per cent decrease in the number of average daily sales. Despite this, NHBC statistics show that overall the past four months applications are up five per cent on last year."
New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 13,518 in April 2003, a three per cent increase on the same month last year (13,081).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 503 new homes were sold each day during April 2003, a 12 per cent decrease on the same month last year (574).
