UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JULY 2003
Statistics released today by NHBC show UK applications to build new homes decreased by four per cent in July 2003 when compared with figures for July last year.
In July 2003 13,630 applications to start new homes in the UK were made for the combined public and private sectors, down four per cent on the same month in 2002 (14,165). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,293 showing a three per cent decrease on July 2002 (12,708). There were 1,337 UK housing association applications, an eight per cent decrease on July of the previous year (1,457).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "July showed a four per cent drop in the number of applications to start new homes, however cumulative applications to date are up on last year and remain well above 2001 levels. The strongest area of growth is in the social housing sector which currently shows an 18 per cent increase on last calendar year."
New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 12,937 in July 2003, a 12 per cent decrease on the same month last year (14,726).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 598 new homes were sold each day during July 2003, a two per cent decrease on the same month last year (611).
