August 2003 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: AUGUST 2003

Statistics released today by NHBC show UK applications to build new homes increased by 16 per cent in August 2003 when compared with figures for August last year.

In August 2003 15,914 applications to start new homes in the UK were made for the combined public and private sectors, up 16 per cent on the same month in 2002 (13,754). Private sector starts for the month rose to 14,700 showing an 18 per cent increase on August 2002 (12,457). There were 1,214 UK housing association applications, a six per cent decrease on August of the previous year (1,297).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The number of NHBC registrations and completions increased in August. The greatest percentage increase in registrations was seen in Merseyside, the North West and Wales. "

New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 12,420 in August 2003, a four per cent increase on the same month last year (11,957).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 454 new homes were sold each day during August 2003, a 13 per cent decrease on the same month last year (520).
