October 2003 new house-building statistics

UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: OCTOBER 2003

Statistics released today by NHBC show UK applications to build new homes increased by 17 per cent in October 2003 when compared with figures for October last year.

In October 2003 17,764 applications to start new homes in the UK were made for the combined public and private sectors, up 17 per cent on the same month in 2002 (15,182). Private sector starts for the month rose to 16,042 showing a 13 per cent increase on October 2002 (14,168). There were 1,722 UK housing association applications, a 70 per cent increase on October of the previous year (1,014).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "NHBC statistics show that the new housing market is in good shape. The number of NHBC registrations increased in October, particularly the number of housing associations and to date NHBC registrations are up six per cent on last year. "

New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 16,096 in October 2003, a four per cent increase on the same month last year (15,545).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 522 new homes were sold each day during October 2003, a four per cent decrease on the same month last year (546).
