UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JANUARY 2004
Statistics released today by NHBC reveal that the number of UK applications to build new homes in January 2004 showed little change when compared with figures for January last year.
In January 2004 14,807 applications to start new homes in the UK were made by the combined public and private sectors, showing a minor decrease on the same month in 2003 (14,839). Private sector starts for the month fell to 12,919, showing a five per cent decrease on January 2003 (13,539). There were 1,888 UK housing association applications, a 45 per cent increase on January of the previous year (1,300).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "Although the number of applications to start new homes in January showed little change on the same month last year, they show a 50 per cent increase on the number of starts reported for December 2003. "
New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 8,692 in January 2004, an 18 per cent decrease on the same month last year (10,625).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 547 new homes were sold each day during January 2004, a one per cent decrease on the same month last year (552).
