UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: FEBRUARY 2004

Statistics released today by NHBC reveal that the number of UK applications to build new homes in February 2004 increased when compared with figures for February last year.

In February 2004 15,629 applications were made to start new homes in the UK by the combined public and private sectors, showing a three per cent increase on the same month in 2003 (15,156). Private sector starts for the month rose to 13,919 showing a three per cent increase on February 2003 (13,451). There were 1,710 UK housing association applications, showing virtually no change on February of the previous year (1,705).

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "The number of applications to start new homes and the average number of new homes sold each day in February show a healthy increase on February 2003 figures. Furthermore, the number of housing association starts so far this year show a twenty per cent increase on last year. "

New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 11,775 in February 2004, a 16 per cent decrease on the same month last year (14,013).

Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 546 new homes were sold each day during February 2004, a 14 per cent increase on the same month last year (481).
