UK NEW HOUSE BUILDING STATISTICS: JULY 2004
Statistics released today by NHBC reveal that the number of UK applications to build new homes in July 2004 increased substantially when compared with figures for July last year.
In July 2004 18,518 applications were made to start new homes in the UK by the combined public and private sectors, showing a 36 per cent increase on the same month in 2003 (13,630). Private sector starts for the month increased to 16,160 showing a 31 per cent increase on July 2003 (12,293). There were 2,358 UK housing association applications, showing a 76 per cent increase on July of the previous year (1,337).
Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, says: "Although the percentage increase in applications to start new homes partly reflects the relatively low number in July 2003, this July was an extremely buoyant month for both the private and social sectors in house building. Furthermore the overall number of applications so far this year is up six per cent on last year."
New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 13,879 in July 2004, a seven per cent increase on the same month last year (12,950).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 646 new homes were sold each day during July 2004, an eight per cent increase on the same month last year (598).
