UK new house-building statistics - May 2006 22/06/06
Statistics released today by NHBC reveal that the number of UK applications to build new homes in May 2006 increased when compared with figures for May last year.
In May 2006 18,768 applications were made to build new homes in the UK in the combined public and private sectors, showing a 17 per cent increase on the same month in 2005 (15,979). Private sector applications for the month were 16,259, showing a 22 per cent increase on May 2005 (13,303.) There were 2,509 UK housing association applications, showing a six per cent decrease on May of the previous year (2,676).
Imtiaz Farookhi, NHBC Chief Executive, says: "Our latest statistics show that so far this year we have received 84,802 applications to build new homes, an increase of 14 per cent on the same period last year. Feedback from house builders also suggests that the housing market is doing well. However, with summer and the World Cup underway, there is an expectation that fewer potential purchasers will be visiting sites during the coming months." New build completions for the combined public and private sectors totalled 15,344 in May 2006, an eight per cent increase on the same month last year (14,206). Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 779 new homes were sold each day during May 2006, a 39 per cent increase on the same month last year (561). Note to editors: NHBC statistics are based almost exclusively on information relating to its 19,000 (approx.) registered house builders who construct around 85% of the new homes built in the UK. As such they represent a unique source of detailed, up-to-date information on new home construction and the house building industry.
