How our NVQs work office

NVQ programmes require learners to demonstrate their competence to an approved assessor in their place of work.

A learner will have a one-to-one induction which includes profiling to ensure their suitability for the qualification and a review of any prior learning. A minimum of two further workplace visits are provided with continuous on-line assessment and feedback available through our on-line electronic portfolio system. Where a learner has gaps in their knowledge and/or competence our assessor helps them access suitable learning.

We use a range of assessment methods which include direct observation, professional discussion, witness testimony, questioning, use of naturally occurring evidence and signposting from the workplace. Learners, with help from their allocated assessor prepare an on-line portfolio of authentic, valid, current and sufficient evidence.

We expect most NVQs to take 9 to 12 months at all levels although this can be achieved earlier if required.

All NVQs now attract credits within the Qualifications Credit Framework. These credits can be used in the future towards other further or higher education courses.

There are no formal entry requirements for any level NVQ other than candidates must be working within the specific occupation and at the right level.

After we have processed the application, the candidate's local assessor arranges their 'Induction and Briefing'.  After induction, candidates will be registered with the Awarding Organisation for the NVQ selected.

The process for certification is:

Please note this process normally takes three to four weeks, but can take up to ten weeks depending on factors that are outside the control of NHBC Training Services.
