The link between NVQs and Pride in the Job success

A construction NVQ is a benchmark qualification that proves your occupational competence to current and future employers. NVQs also benefit employers by helping them to develop and retain a trained, skilled workforce. Some NVQs lead to membership of professional organisations such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) as well as Gold or Black CSCS cards.

Why choose NHBC

We offer NVQs from Levels 3 to 7 in subjects focussed on construction site management, site inspection and contract operations. We take great care to ensure that we match candidates with the right level of NVQ to set them up for success from the start. Our NVQs are tailored to house building and are delivered by assessors with a wealth of experience from a range of roles in the sector.

An NVQ can take up to 12 months to complete but, on average, our candidates complete within 10 months dependent on their current work experience and level of proactivity.

The link between NVQs and Pride in the Job success

In looking at the Pride in the Job 2022 Quality Award winners, we were delighted and heartened to discover that 25% of the winners were studying or had recently completed an NVQ with us. This link between further study and success in the competition is significant and demonstrates the value of additional study in on-the-job performance.

Hear from one of our Quality Award winning NVQ candidates

Having previously served in the Royal Marines, Tom Jupp started as a trainee assistant site manager with Vistry South West in September 2019. With his work ethic and eye for detail, Tom was quickly promoted and, in his first year as a site manager, won a Quality Award for his work at the Monument View development in Wellington, where he’s responsible for building Bovis and Linden properties.

He began studying for an NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management – Residential Development with NHBC in July 2021 and has already completed the qualification.

He says:

“I’ve really enjoyed being able to put all I’ve learnt into an NVQ, being able to show how much I know about my role and what I do. I’m very proud to have gained a qualification so early in my construction career.

“Studying for the NVQ has given me the ability to see what areas I need to focus on. I’ve been pushed out of my comfort zone but it’s also given me the confidence to move onto my Level 7 and in due course go after promotion to area build manager.

“I think the NVQ contributed to my success in Pride in the Job because I was able to use what I learnt from the qualification to create a more efficient, quality-driven and organised site.”
