Having previously worked in construction for 30 years, Brian O’Kane decided to further his career within the industry by doing an NVQ while working for the Braidwater Group.
Brian began studying for an NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management – Residential Development with NHBC in October 2019 and has now completed the qualification. His dedication to excellence and quality also led to him winning a prestigious Pride in the Job award for the Northern Ireland region.
He says:
“The NVQ has helped me immensely in my role as site manager. I would thoroughly recommend it as it has enhanced my knowledge in all aspects of the construction field, from communication to technical and health and safety issues.
It has been a great asset in my career progression as I will be moving from site management to contracts management in the very near future. The support from my assessor was second to none and he was always available when needed. Without a doubt he made the whole thing a lot less complicated and I think that’s the reason I completed it on the time frame.
It was a good collaboration with my assessor and I want to say thanks for his support throughout this journey. Without a doubt, my assessor has added a lot to my construction knowledge - from building standards to legal responsibilities on health and safety for individuals and site conditions.
I found the NVQ particularly tough with getting the knowledge out of my head onto paper but with the help of my assessor once I started the course I completed it in 3 months.
I thoroughly enjoyed the course from start to finish and the help and guidance from the assessors is excellent.
The course content was relevant, and the learning portal was easy to navigate and user friendly. David my tutor explained all the processes in detail and led the course well.
The qualification really cements all the knowledge you need to perform the assistant site manager role.
Highly recommend the course to further your personal development and it does fit into your everyday working life.
From start to finish, this process has been very smooth. I have undertaken two other NVQs prior to this one and the uploading and cross-referencing of evidence on your online system is so simple in comparison, it’s almost cheating!
It was great to learn new technical skills and work closely with NHBC. My NHBC assessor was really helpful and could always be reached by phone or email.
My assessor was excellent, making me feel at ease with the process. I found the whole course user friendly and easy to navigate.
